Passed the Test

Happy Halloween Bloggies!!!!  Are you all planning to enjoy the frightful night?  We will be hitting the streets after dinner so that the D Man can load up on the sweet stuff.

This morning I ventured out into the shadows for a run – man do I miss the early AM sunrise. I don’t think that it started to get light until at least 7.  That is late to this early birdie.

I did a 9.2 mile run.  I would have liked to go a little farther but I had to boogie home to get D to karate.  Not that 9.2 is shabby mileage.

I made a super fast bagel with almond butter and apple butter for breakfast.  Oatmeal would have been nice but I just did not have the time.

To our surprise (and D’s), he was tested for a new belt today during class and HE PASSED!!!  He is now a yellow belt. I wish that I knew so that I could have brought the camera and captured his beaming smile when his Sensei called him up to receive his new belt.  D’s mouth literally dropped and you could see his excitement.

To celebrate, D asked if we could go to the bookstore so he could have a snack in their cafe.  While we were there, I flipped through some vegan cookbooks.  I am thinking about getting Veganomicon and Eat Drink & Be Vegan. They both seem to have a lot of recipes that I would enjoy (and maybe Charlie). Anyone own these? Do you recommend either of these for someone who can not eat soy as well?

When we got home it was definitely time for me to feed my growling tummy. The bagel had left the building.  I had a plate of my usual eats – zucchini, apple, beans (Organic Great Northern this time, rinsed and drained of course), 2 slices of bread with peanut butter and 365 Wild Blueberry Fruit Spread

That is how my Saturday has gone down so far.  We are just hanging out and waiting for the fun to start this evening.  We are taking D trick or treating with his buddy Ethan since my sis already had plans to go to a Halloween party.  D was a little bummed that he will not be with his best chum Rocco but I am pretty sure he will have a blast either way.

I hope you have  a great night.

Luke in Disguise

Happy Friday!  I finally have a minute before I get dinner started to say “Hello”.

Today has been a crazy day – I can not believe that it is already past 4 o’clock.

I was up and out the door by 5 AM.  At the gym I ran 7 miles on the treadmill and then did a fabulous free weight session.  I left feeling pumped and ready to tackle the day.

Breakfast was a super filling bowl of Protein Berry Oatmeal.

1/2 cup oats, water, 1 full scoop of Life Time Vanilla Protein, frozen blueberries & strawberries, PB2 and almond butter.

I needed some serious fuel to carry me through the 2 hours of cleaning.  And it did.

I got D dressed in his Halloween costume before we hit the road.  It was a mad dash to get him to school on time but we did make it.

His Uncle is letting him borrow his very fancy lightsaber for trick or treating tomorrow night.  He was not allowed to bring any weapons or wear a mask to school.

He showed us some of his moves.

Are you done taking pictures yet Mommy?

I keep forgetting who the exact character this costume is supposed to be – Boba Fett or Jengo Fett?  So I asked him who he was while we were driving to school.  He said that he is actually Luke Skywalker disguised as Boba Fett.  He has some imagination.

I drank about half of this POM Light Tea while I was driving.  It was pretty good.  Not too sweet and not too much green tea flavor – just a hint.  I am not a fan of green tea AT ALL and this really was not too potent.  Like I have said before, I am not really someone to drink a sweetened drink – I am a water or seltzer girl.  After half the bottle, I had had enough.

I dropped D off at school where he was greeted by a group of witches – that would be his teachers.  Everyone looked adorable. I love how creative the costumes are these days.

I went home and made myself an after cleaning feast – I was famished.

1/2 cup Organic Chili Beans, apple, summer & zucchini squash and 2 slices of bread topped with almond butter and jelly

Alrighty friends, I must go figure out what I am going to feed my guys for dinner tonight.  I am not sure that Charlie will want to eat leftover Nicoise Salad again. I hope you have a great night.  I think that me and my main squeeze are planning on watching a movie tonight.  We are due for some snuggly time.  Have a great night.

Chili Beans without the Heat

The other day while I was at Whole Foods perusing their ever so abundant supply of canned beans, I stumbled upon one that caught my eye – Organic Chili Beans. Usually I purchase their no sodium added canned beans – not organic but I don’t eat ALL organic ALL the time.  I do try keep the majority of mine and my family’s food consumption organic – there are things that I make exceptions for.  Like my beloved 365 brand chick peas without all the added salt.

Today for lunch I decided to give the new beans a go.  The nutritionals are great and they actually are not that bad on the sodium front.  I always rinse canned beans regardless – I hate all that sludge that covers them.  There is not actually any chili flavor or seasoning on these guys – just a can of mixed beans.  I am actually ok with that. I would rather be in control of the seasoning that I would add to my food.

For lunch I had 1/2 a cup of the beans, zucchini, apple and a english muffin topped with peanut butter and jelly.

The chili beans were very yummy but a tad bit mushy. I like my beans to have a bit firmer texture. I think that is why I like chick peas so much.  They are a pretty sturdy canned bean.

Dinner was not anything too fancy but it was veggie-riffic.  I had zucchini, summer squash, apple (yes 2 in one day – that is how I am rolling lately) and 2 pieces of bread topped with sunflower seed butter and almond butter.

Sorry to make this so short but I have a basket of laundry to fold and then I am off to read.  I am still not finished with New Moon and I am sure that my mom has already made it to the last book.

Tomorrow is a crazy Friday. I am cleaning in the AM and then D has a Halloween party at school.  He is going to be one pooped cookie by the end of the day.

I hope you have a great night.  See you sometime tomorrow in between the craziness.

Learning To Read

We have been really making an effort to teach D to read.  Every night he and Daddy sit together and read one of his letter books. I thought that maybe you would let be brag a bit this morning – I can’t help it – he’s my little sweet tart.  I made a video of him reading with me.  He gets stumped every now and then, but for the most part he does recognize a lot of words.  I hope you enjoy.

In case you are at all curious, I made a big bowl of Pumpkin Oatmeal for breakfast.  It was great post gym fuel.

I just could not resist the pumpkin staring me down in the fridge. It really does add such fluffiness to the oats.

Time to get my little reader dressed.  He has been in PJ’s since Tuesday night – at least I made him put on clean ones.

I hope you have a great Thursday.  The weekend is in sight.  What are you guys doing for Halloween? We are obviously taking D trick or treat.  Let the candy overload begin. Just what a 4 year old needs – SUGAR RUSH.  I will definitely have to ration it out to him.

See ya

Nicoise Salad

Good evening.  The rest of our day was rather uneventful.  Probably a good thing seeing as D was so accident prone this morning.

I opted for a hearty bowl of Pumpkin Protein Oats for dinner. I was craving something warm and tummy filling.  The Jay Robb Vanilla Rice Protein added the perfect amount of sweetness.  Hidden deep inside the pillowy goodness were a few frozen strawberries.

And a big old mound of almond butter topped it off.  This totally hit the spot.

Charlie’s dinner was another Ellie Krieger recipe – Chopped Nicoise Salad.  There was a little prep involved but nothing too time consuming.  I actually had it all prepared even before he arrived home.

The colors in this dish are so gorgeous.  The downside is the rather pungent onion and tuna smell that is permeating my kitchen.

He really liked the salad and gobbled up the entire mound that I served him.  There are plenty of leftovers which I am sure he will be enjoying at home.  Not sure that tuna and onion falls under good work etiquette.

My little man is already tucked into bed and hopefully off to dreamland.  I am hoping that he gets a super nights rest and wakes up feeling oodles better.  His mood was pleasant today despite all his mishaps.  Most of the time the crabby monster comes with the cooties – not the case this time.

Well I hope you all had a fabulous day.  See you tomorrow.

No School for the Sicky

Well last night D started coming down with a really icky cough. He always gets croupy when his head is all stuffy.  Poor little guy.  We set up the Vicks Vaporizer for him and administered some meds.

This morning I ventured to the gym while the guys got some more Z’s. I did a 5 mile run, 20 minutes on the Elliptical and weights.

When I got home my boys were awake and had already had themselves quite a morning.  Apparently, D decided to put his hand in front of the warm mist vapor and gave himself a nice burn.  Then when daddy was trying to get him to go to the potty he ran away (he was afraid to wash his burn), and tripped over a laundry basket and skinned his hip. He’s not having a good day.

I managed to take a shower and eat breakfast in a flash since I had to be back at the gym to babysit.  Thank goodness my main squeeze was able to work from home this morning because there was no way I could take the ill one along.

Breakfast was super fast – a Rudi’s Sweet Wheat Bagel topped with almond butter and a few speckles of jelly.

My gym is having an Open House today. Anyone can go in and work out for free ALL DAY.  It was super busy but all the kiddies were very well behaved.  We have a babysitter on staff who does amazing face painting. She came in to adorn their little faces – they all looked super cute.  Too bad the D Man had to miss it.  The gym staff and the aerobics instructors were all decked out in Halloween costumes.  Olive Oil was teaching Body Pump and Fred Flintstone was giving weight training tips to clients.  One of the owners of the gym was dressed in a vintage women’s McDonald’s uniform – HE looked pretty silly – wig and all.

I stopped at the store to pick up some OJ for the sicky. I might have also snagged him a donut – I am a softy when he is not feeling well.  He was super excited and gobbled up the donut in a matter of seconds.

For lunch I made a bowl of goodies – kidney beans, zucchini, pumpkin, apple and cinnamon.

I also had a plate of goodies – the rest of the zucchini & apple and an open faced peanut butter sandwich.

I got to enjoy my lunch with my honey before he headed off to work. It was nice to have some company.

After lunch I made D take a bath.  The warm steam really helped his stuffy head.  He just ate a very late lunch during which he spilled a full cup of orange juice all over the table and floor.  OJ is such a sticky mess if not cleaned up properly. I gave everything a thorough scrub down and while I was doing said task he told me I am the worlds best cleaner – YIPPIE!!

I am keeping D home from school even though he seems to be feeling much better.  He has actually stopped the hacking cough.  I am just erring on the side of caution.  I would hate for him to get sicker and miss the Halloween party at school on Friday.

That’s how my day has gone down so far.  How’s yours going?

See you later friends.

The Food that Fuels Me

Hello blogland.  How has your Tuesday been?  The weather here today was so raw.  I wish I lived someplace warm.  I am such a chilly person and I hate to be cold.  Layers are very necessary.

This morning I was up and out the door by 5 AM to hit up the gym.  I did 20 minutes on the Stepmill, 20 minutes on the Elliptical and a 20 minute run on the Treadmill. I also fit in a great strength training session.

Breakfast was a warm bowl of Pumpkin Oats.

1/2 cup oats, water, 1 full scoop of Jay Robb Vanilla Rice Protein powder, 1/2 cup pumpkin, cinnamon, PB2 and almond butter.

Pure deliciousness!!!

Lunch was bread with peanut butter, mushrooms, sliced apple

zucchini, kidney beans and the rest of the apple. I tossed on a few shakes of cinnamon for a little punch of flavor.

This afternoon I had to drag D to the grocery store.  Being so busy this weekend, I never managed to get my shopping done. I am using a few of Ellie Krieger’s recipes for Charlie’s dinners this week. I went to the store with a mission – I love when I plan ahead.  Even though I had my list, it still took me forever – having the “wee one” along will do that.   Thankfully I walked out of there without forgetting anything.  Honey you will have some yummy (meat free) dinners this week.

Tonight I made him Portobello Lasagna Rollups along with her Arugula Salad with Pesto Vinaigrette.  Why do I always choose the recipes with multiple steps?  The rollups are not that difficult to prepare once you get through all the prep work.  Poor D really was annoyed with me.  At least the salad was a cinch. My main man loved them both and there is lots of leftovers for him to take for lunches this week.

For my dinner I basically ate the same thing that I did for lunch – english muffin topped with almond butter and sunflower seed butter, apple and mushrooms.

And I had roasted acorn squash mixed with chick peas, apple and cinnamon. I guess I just can’t go wrong with my lovely veggie/fruit/cinnamon combo.  It is filling, flavorful and belly friendly.

So there you have the food that fuels this mama.  I did sneak in a quick snack this afternoon while I was cooking up a storm.  I had a pear and a protein drink – 1/2 a scoop of Life Time Protein mixed with 1 cup almond milk. Sorry there is no photo – I literally tossed it in my face as I was cooking.  No time to stop and break out the camera.  Besides it really was not that fancy to look at.

Tomorrow is a babysitting day so I should probably get to bed early.  It is just way to hard to put my book down once I get into my groove.  I am so close to the end.  I hope you have a great night.

See if This Works

So I have not made any announcements about this yet as I was trying it out for a bit to see if I could actually survive without it – I am going dairy free.  I have been eating a diary free diet for 5 days now and I am doing great.  My skin is actually clearing up and my tummy feels SUPER.  I am sick and tired of that belly bloat that I get after consuming dairy and frankly I am REALLY tired of the acne breakouts. I was worried that I would miss the protein from diary but I have been using my Jay Robb and Life Time protein powders as well as plenty of beans.  I have never been a big fan of meat – I find that it is very hard on my system.  I am very happy living without it but giving up dairy was a big step.  I started by cutting out all the greek yogurt (I ate it everyday) and then I slowly gave up cottage cheese and cheese.  It was not too tough to do and my body does not feel the slightest bit sluggish. I am going to continue with this diet for a while and see if it works.  I hope you all hang with me as I venture down this new path.

Ok onto the eats.

Breakfast was a Rudi’s Bagel topped with almond butter and jelly.  I also made a protein drink using a scoop of Jay Robb’s Vanilla Rice powder, Amazing Grass Berry Super Food and water.

Then I took  my sidekick to the gym so mommy could get in a workout.  I did 20 minutes of intervals on the Stair Climber, 40 minutes on the Elliptical and free weights.  It was super fabulous and I left feeling ready to tackle my Monday.

Lunch was roasted acorn squash mixed with 1/2 a cup chick peas and cinnamon.  Acorn squash just might be my favorite gourd.  This combo was so yummy and very belly friendly.

I also had an apple and 2 pieces of bread topped with sunflower seed butter and almond butter.  The golden delicious apple was super sweet.  Apples are, by far, my favorite fruit. I could NEVER give them up.

This afternoon I took D over to see his best pal Rocco.  I think he was having withdrawals. I mean, he only spent the entire weekend with him.  He could not possibly go an entire day without seeing his chum. I got to visit with my sis while the boys played.

While we were there I had a protein drink, which was just a scoop of Life Time powder mixed with water.

For dinner I piled on the veggies.  I started with a bowl of goodies – 1/2 cup kidney beans, 1/2 cup pumpkin and a little chopped pear. I added cinnamon for some flavor.

I also ate some summer squash, mushrooms, the rest of the pear and an english muffin topped with peanut butter. After I snapped the photo I decided that the english muffin would be better with a little dab of jelly.  MMMMMM, PB & J = my favorite.

As you can see I did eat plenty of veggies today and I got a good amount of protein intake too.

I am just about to make a nice warm cup of tea and hopefully settle into the pages of my book.  I am more than halfway through New Moon but my mom and sis have managed to make it to Eclipse – I am way behind.

I hope you have a great night.

A 10 Mile Run & A Parade

Hello blog friends.  How has your weekend been going?  We have been non-stop crazy people here at my homestead.  Yesterday was a whirlwind and today has shaped up to be the same.  At least it has all been fun.

My nephew slept over last night – very little sleeping occurred.  He had me up at 3:30 AM to feed him breakfast and I was never able to fall back to sleep.  I was in need of some alone time so I hit the pavement and just kept running.  I did not have a set mileage in mind when I left but I was just enjoying the fresh air and the peacefulness, I did not want to stop.  I completed my first 10 mile run in what seems like forever (lately I have been keeping my runs to an 8 mile max).  It felt marvelous.

Breakfast was of course a bowl of the most wonderful purple oatmeal.

This was 1/2 cup oats cooked with water and a scoop of protein powder.  I added cinnamon and a full cup of frozen blueberries at the end.  I topped it with PB2 and a tbsp Almond Butter. It was filling and really hit the spot.

It was then time to get the boys and myself in costume to head to the Halloween Parade in my sis’s town.  I marched in it with my Girl Scout Troop.

I dressed as a cowgirl.  A hat would have really made the costume but I was unable to locate one – I guess they are not “in” at the moment.

So here is the bummer – Charlie forgot the camera in the truck.  I have a few that he took with his phone.  I was really hoping to have some nice ones of the kiddos in their costumes so that my mom could see.  Oh well, there is still Halloween night to be captured.

Here are the ones that I have to share.

The group of girls is my Troop and I am following behind.  We had two leaders in the front and two in the back to keep the group together.

My sis is pulling the wagon. Too bad she is blocked – her costume was great – she was a pirate.

We carried on for about another quarter mile.

The boys had a great time collecting candy and D ended up giving himself a tummy ache.  I guess daddy let him eat too much during the parade. We ended up nixing the pumpkin carving since we were all so pooped after the sleepover adventure.  D came home and had a breakdown – the lack of sleep finally caught up with him.  I was able to get him to take a little nap which really helped him a lot.  I can’t believe the weekend is already over.  These past 2 days flew by.

Now lets see if I can stay awake for Desperate Housewives tonight.  I might need to sleep a few extra hours in the morning.  I hope you have a great night.  See you tomorrow.

Niacin Flush??????

Happy Friday!!!  I hope you all are enjoying your day.

I started my day the usual way –

wake up before the sun and get in a great workout

made a stellar bowl of blueberry oatmeal for breakfast

This was one of my best bowls yet.  Not sure why it tasted so good but it was extra creamy delicious.

DSC04919 DSC04922

Every morning while I cook my breakfast D likes to play games on the computer. Then I kick him off so that I can check and see how all my favorite bloggers are doing.  Yes, I eat and read. I find it very relaxing. I can actually take my time when I eat breakfast – usually the only meal of the day that I get to.

Lunch today was back to the “safe foods” – I was not in the mood for another full body rash.  I had apple, zucchini and an english muffin topped with almond butter and jelly.

I also had chick peas with some of my apple and cinnamon.

So I was doing a little research online (while I was eating my breakfast). I found some interesting info on a Niacin Flush.  Nutritional yeast contains niacin and some people have experienced a rash or a reaction after consuming larger amounts of it.  I am wondering if that is what happened to me yesterday.  I guess I won’t know unless I decided to consume nutritional yeast again. I just might have it on its own to see what happens.  I just need to make sure that do not need to go anywhere afterwards. I would probably freak out every person that I came in contact with.

This weekend is going to be crazy busy around here. Here is what is going down:

Saturday – karate, bowling birthday party for one of D’s friends, Rocco sleeping over

Sunday – I am marching in a Halloween Parade with my Girls Scout Troop (in costume). D and Charlie will be there (D in his costume) collecting candy that gets tossed out to spectators.  Then we are going to carve pumpkins with my sis and her family.

How about you guys?  Anything fun planned for the next few days?

See you later friends.
